Video: Bridleless Freestyle Mustang Makeover

31 Mar

130 days of training.

She hopes to train horses full time after she graduates from Purdue.

I don’t think she will have trouble getting customers, lol.

The young ladies name is Madison Shambaugh and her horse is the mustang Terk. This video is from the VA Extreme Mustang Makeover 2015. The team was awarded Overall Reserve Champion, Fan Favorite, Rookie award, & Young Guns (18-21 yr old) award.

I’m such a sap. I choked up when I saw the sidepassing. Maybe it’s because I see a horse who five months earlier was an untouched wild horse, and now not only do we have a horse who completely trusts her rider, but trusts a rider enough to enter into a competition, bridleless, with a rider wearing a large gown. Well done, Madison. I see such fantastic things for you.

The finals were composed of two parts and she made a mistake of over spinning in her first part where the champion didn’t, when the freestyle came she got perfect scores and he didn’t but bc it was an added score he won by a few points.

The horse’s name was Doc Holliday. I don’t know the trainers name. some people had a list of the trainer’s name, the horse’s name and other information like which HMA the horse was from, but I don’t know where they got the list from, I never had one.

im from her area. It’s nearly impossible to get your horse into her for training.

She’s impressive on everything she rides, not just with terk

Interesting how we are finally learning relationship, subtle movement in our legs, touches in the hands and body, get more beautiful results, than yanking on a horses mouth. Im pretty sure the horses are saying; Hallelujahs!

I was there representing North American Mustang Association and Registry. This was awesome. The judges gave her top scores, and she and Terk deserved it. (I also had the honor of presenting her with a beautiful belt buckle. This was simply the best!

Oh, the champion was Doc Holiday. He won overall, but no one could touch Terk in the Freestyle.

It might just be my imagination, but did anyone else get the feeling that this incredible young lady was tipping her hat a little at another young lady we all love to watch? If you ever have one of those days Stacy when you’re asking yourself if what you do and who you are really matters…just watch this video again.

I’m so proud of Shannon and Terk, of course, they are fellow Hoosiers. LOL!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdzSD2rAW_E While her award winning ride was awesome to watch, I was even more captivated by the video of the first days of their partnership. Lots of training very similar to what you showed us with Jac.

I agree with Barbara. The way the young lady stroked her horse’s mane and neck immediately reminded me of Stacy. She took her time and the horse was waiting for his cues. Loved it!

I had the pleasure of being there in person – what this video doesn’t tell you or show you is that the entire audience was on their feet, and that it was less than 30 degrees…. these freestyle finals started at 6:30pm at the END of DAY TWO of bitter cold and crappy weather… These beautiful horses and their trainers were tired and frozen and kept on going…. the mustang competition is what got me to the horse festival, and I’m glad we went… and most of all, I’m glad Madison got to adopt this horse that she clearly put so much effort in to. We sat among her family for part of the competition on Day 1, you could tell they were so proud.

I had the pleasure of watching this in person – and as impressive as it is in video – it was a thousand times more impressive to be there. What this video doesn’t show you is that the freestyle portion of the competition began at 6:30pm on DAY TWO of competition…. and it was below 30 degrees outside. These trainers and their horses were tired and cold, and yet still managed to pull off standing ovations. Madison’s performance had the audience on their feet. I had the pleasure of sitting among her family for a portion of the competition on Day 1 – and you could tell they were so proud of how far this young lady has come and excited to see where life takes her. Great job Madision! You made the rest of us proud too! Best of all, she got to adopt this mustang when it was all said and done. Terk is hers for keeps now!

This is what I’ve always wanted to do but never got the chance with my horses, it would be a blast and a real learning experience. Thanks for the show, I have Arabians and an arabian/mustang stallion as well as his off spring and he is as gentle as a kitten and is so willing to please, will follow me anywhere and still has the spirit he rightfully should have. I break and train my own horses the horse whisper way, calm gentle, and listening to the horse. It is the best experience ever.
