A Horses View: The good and the bad

Newt the horse diary

Newt, the horse, is keeping a diary.

Dear Diary,

Hello Diary, this is my first time doing this but with all of my traveling I want to make sure I remember it all. The good and the bad.

The first good thing I want to remember is my first time swimming. It was scary at first because the ground was all squishy but then it got fun. It made me snort. I hope I get to do it again.

The bad thing is I got in trouble. Mom told me not to beg for treats…but I keep forgetting. The kids have been sneaking me treats and then I got all excited and kept stopping other people. It’s really hard to remember which ones give me treats and which ones don’t. I will try harder tomorrow.

Well, thats all I have for now. I’m headed to bed. We just got to a new place today and I bet we will do something fun tomorrow.

Newt, I have been keeping a daily diary since 1970!! Yep, 45 years! I was all of 10 when I got my first one as a Christmas present. It is fun to read past years events because most of it you will forget!

Here in the UK we have Hovis’ Friday Diary , which started on a horse magazine’s BB a few years ago and has progressed into three published books of his weekly adventures … which are hilarious. Hovis is a clydesdale cross with lots of “manly feathers” on his legs … incedently Hovis is also the brand name of a wholemeal square loaf of bread.

I love this. It is really about horses. I love all my horses and really have got them, because my mare used to be lonely. Now she is on a huge mountain side with her six years old daughter, two other mares and their six years old daughters (of the same father) and the father, who is now a Gelding. Apart from logging water and food I am training the little ones. It is very sacrificing for a person who did not love horses. But I am aware of the quality of life I am allowed to giving them and they are more like pets, but they have no stable vices or insane looks on their faces as I have seen them in stabled horses. It is a priviledge for a horse to still know their mommy and their daddy.

Newt………. wow a diary is a great idea……….. now about the treats…….. you have to learn to nicker and grumble and talk instead of checking hands…….. it works much better and then theres the cow face displeasure look that works when they ignore the chatty nickers……………….some times when I’m really outstanding I get this stuff in a red and white can or bottle ……. I think its called coke……. that is the bestest. A very successful partner in crime to get treats friend………. “Drover”
