“Don’t cry because it is over, smile because it happened.”

09 Feb

Heaven’s remuda improved by one fine mare on February 8, leaving this planet one short, with the passing of Roxy (aka Whizzards Baby Doll), best known as horsewoman Stacy Westfall’s bareback and bridleless mount.  She sustained traumatic injury after apparently becoming cast in her stall sometime during the night of Feb. 5.  Roxy was treated for two days at Valley View Animal Hospital in Dover,Ohio, before being humanely euthanized on Feb. 8.  Roxy was due to foal in early March, and although a C-section was performed, the little sorrel stud colt proved too weak to survive.

Roxy had a wide and varied career that included becoming the 2nd highest earning offspring of Whizard Jac, who was both NRHA futurity champion and USET champion.  She won two All-American Quarter Horse Congress Championships and two Reserve Championships, the NRHA Futurity freestyle championship, and the Tulsa Reining Classic twice, to name just a few.

Roxy’s championship performance in the 2006 All American Quarter Horse Congress, with Stacy riding bareback and bridleless, went viral on the Internet and led to Roxy and Stacy appearing on the Ellen DeGeneres show.  Roxy, ever the lady, gave Ellen a memorable ride before appearing before the live studio audience and accepting peppermints from Stacy.

Roxy leaves behind four offspring, all of whom were carried by recipient mares.  She will be much missed by owner Greg Gessner, the Westfall family and everyone who valued watching the great trust and love shown between she and Stacy when they performed as one.

More information to follow in the next few days:(

Stacy, I learned of you and Roxy from a video on Facebook tonite. I followed it to Youtube, and watched several more. What stood out the most (for me), was the love and respect you had for each other! That in itself made it so enjoyable to watch, not to mention the talent. I came to your website, and found that Roxy had passed. I know you feel very blessed to have had that time with her!!

Stacy, Sending you warm hugs and prayers from California….. You and this beautiful mare have taught so many so much, this mare’s beauty, kindness of heart, technique, and abilities have enlightened and changed many of our abilitites and views on horsemanship. You and this mare have touched our lives in many ways. Every person and creature come into our lives for a reason. It is not ours to choose how or when they leave us, but, to understand why they were in our lives to begin with. She will always be in all of our hearts as are you at this time …… Much Love!

    February 9, 2012 at 3:07 pm

Watching your famous 2006 ride on Roxy helped me and my family realize that there was a whole other level of horsemanship that we should aspire to. We will be forever grateful to both of you for that. Thank you for sharing her with us. Our heartfelt condolences to you and to Greg Gessner on this loss.

I am so very sorry, Stacy. Roxy was an exceptional horse and I’ve posted your tribute ride on Facebook over and over as everyone I know loves to watch it time and again…….such an amazing oneness and so inspiring to any rider ! My beautiful QH mare randomly broke her leg in her one acre paddock in November and it still makes no sense to me so I empathize more than you could ever know. I fully believe that there is a “Rainbow Bridge” for our beautiful horses and we will meet and ride them again one day. For now they are in a heavenly pasture enjoying the greenest of grass and playful days with no pain.
    My heart is with you.

Am deeply saddned to read this post this morning here in Australia. We share a bond with our horses that not all understand and when this is bond is broken in such a way we need our time to heal. Take care to all those that have been involved in the care of Roxy and trying to give her last foal a fighting chance, some very special people. Stacey it was watching you ride her that gave me the kick to get back on my horse after an accident and build my relationship with her, it also lead me to your website and especially making sure I saw you at Equitana. Will treasure the signed posters of you and roxy that were signed by my kids Kaily and Nathan.

It is sad to lose such a horse. I am thankful that Roxy received all the care and treatment possible. Sometimes it is not possible to save our beloved animals. The double loss of her foal is tragic as well. One can only go forward……to go back over all the woulda, coulda, shoulda is pointless. Those of us who love and admire horses will miss this exceptional mare. What an inspiration both Roxy and Stacey have been to those looking for the ultimate riding experience. There will be other horses in the future who will do what the two of them accomplished but there will never be another Roxy. God is good, all the time and I am thankful she was relieved of her suffering. Our hearts heal with time. We will never forget the beautiful Roxy. I will smile because Roxy happened and I watched that ride over and over. RIP Roxy, you lived your life well and showed the world what can happen between horse and rider with patience, love and positive training. Thank you Stacey and Roxy for sharing your connection to one another.

I am so sorry, Stacy! Know that I feel your pain, because I just had my best old trail horse put down on Jan. 9, after 14 years with him. I have watched that ride you and Roxy did in 2006, several times. Amazing. God is with you in your loss. In the words of a certain song, “It tells of one whose loving heart can feel my deepest woe, who in each sorrow bears a part that none can bear below.” Those words spoke to me, hope they encourage you as well.

If tears could build a stairway,
    And memories were a lane,
I would walk right up to Heaven
    To bring you home again.
    No farewells were spoken,
    No time for goodbye,
You were gone before I knew it,
    And only God knows why.
My heart still aches in sadness,
    And secret tears will flow,
What it meant meant to me to lose you,
    No one will ever know.

Im sorry I cant help but weep. I cried when I saw Stacy ride this beautiful mare at The Road to The Horse. I tried to hide my tears as I thought people around me would think I was silly. We were standing and I looked at the big cowboy to my left and he was crying too. I dont know who he was but, I bet he will cry with me when he hears this news. We were crying at the shear beauty of horse and rider. I will always be blessed that I saw this amazing performance in person. The least I can do is shed a tear for a gallant mare….

I am so distraught by hearing that my hero and reason for inspiration has passed. Someone else described my feelings best, but …Words can not express how I felt the first time I saw you ride bareback and bridleless to “Live like you were dying” as a tribute to your fathers passing. I cried, even sobbed as I watched with complete adoration and humility. That ride was the reason for my stepping up my horsemanship into something more. I am so sorry for your loss and the passing of an amazing animal and partner…I’m sad it’s over, but so happy it happened. I cannot think of a more beautiful way to envision our God, His horses, and your sweet Roxy. Thank you for all you do and for all you represent.

I was so happy to meet you at Rittenour’s, and happy to have known Roxy through your breathtaking performances.

That’s for sure. He will choose the best and Roxy will be in the front of the line. I just cant get over the fact that something so terrible can happen to a horse as wonderful and perfect as Roxy was. Her legacy will live on forever. Hope to see more videos of rides that you are doing. You don’t have to be in Hollywood to be famous!

I remember seeing Roxy on a youtube video shortly after her 2006 ride and immediately became a huge fan. Stacy, you’ve been one of my idols for years, and it is heartbreaking to see such a tremendous horse leaving this world. She was an image of sheer perfection in the equine world and will never be forgotten. So sorry ❤

Oh Stacy, my heart is filled with sadness for your sudden loss – my prayers and love are going out to you :).
On the other hand I feel such a sense of admiration and strength as I read your posts heading “Don’t cry because it over, smile because it happened” – Roxy has up until this point made a huge difference to millions of people around the world, and she will continue to do so whilst she watches over everyone from heaven. It really makes me think how special every moment is in our lives and that whilst we are living, that is when we can unknowingly be an inspiration to others, as you and Roxy have done. Thank you Stacy for following your dreams and with such a great attitude.
Stacy you have helped me to follow my dreams too – Sincerely thank you

To Stacy and Roxy’s extended family….my heart aches for you as I truly know your pain. My beloved Tres Dee Sol – better known as Sunday was euthanized the day before Roxy. Sunday was born on my farm and his body rests 20 feet from where he entered this world 23 years ago. Selfishly I kept Sunday at home and prevented him from earning the accolades that I know he would have achieved…..a few days after birth he ran his mom until she tied up because she couldn’t catch him….he herded us all into his heart and his love for making Snow Angels will be remembered by many. I’ve cried many tears over his passing but just yesterday I was thinking of Stacy’s memorable performance with Roxy and another loss that Stacy had last year. I had no clue they were faced with what I had 24 hours earlier.

We’ve shed tears of the loss of our friends and my thoughts and prayers go out to you all. My comfort is knowing that they gallop over fields of green and will greet us once again when we make the same transition to the mansion that my Lord, Jesus Christ has prepared….what a place that will be!

    God Bless!

I am so sorry for your loss Stacy. I understand the pain you are feeling, as I lost my fjord gelding April 25th 2011. You may not read this because of all of your other fans but I feel for you. If it wasn’t for you with Roxy, I wouldn’t be so determined, motivated, and excited for my goal with my blue roan filly who my old friend also named Roxy. I am so grateful. Your partner Roxy’s spirit will live on, in the hearts of her offspring. God bless you ❤ R.I.P. Roxy ❤

Both you and Roxy have inspired so many (this feels like an understatement). She was so amazing in the performance that I have watched at least 100 times, usually with a gather of little 4-H girls….that go home and dream of “their day”. It is never easy to say good-bye and see you later to such a partner in life. My only solace is that when we join God in heaven he wants us to have our hearts desire, so on that note, I trust you two will be joined once again. Until then I hope one of those babies will become as great as their dam.

It was a great pleasure to watch you two in the freestyles. I owned Shining Salute, who Rocky Dare showed competed with you in the freestyles at Congress. Salute, at 12 years passed as well about a year ago and I can say it is not easy. Roxy and you inspired many people and showed how great a bond is between you and your horse. All of your fans are extremely grateful to have experienced such a beautiful connection in her fabulous bareback and bridleless freestyles. May Roxy rest in peace and have big grassy endless fields up in heaven!

OMG Stacy!!! I didn’t expect to read this, I’m soooo very sorry for your loss. I don’t understand why and how freak things happen to horses, No matter how careful we are in taking care of them, it is out of our control. Only the lord knows! Roxy and you gave to us ( the back yard horse people) encouragement, patients, and determination that with trust and love and repetition you can do anything with your best friend. My hat is off to you! I pray you and Gregg & your family find comfort with all the love that your followers and friends can give you at this sad time. My heart breaks for this outstanding horse. Wow….so sorry to hear this news. I lost a mare 3 weeks before she foaled. It is hard to take the loss of the mare but then there is that baby you have been feeling kicking all that time when you place your hand on the mare. Its tough. And then, Iam a teacher and I couldnt go to work because I cried so much. I took ONE day off of work with my swelled up eyes and a teacher told me when I went back…” some people act as if animals are people.” I just looked at him and walked away. There were no words to cure that ignorance and what I would have said would have been too harsh so I didnt say it. Im an art teacher and he teaches history…I didnt realize we worked together and were worlds apart!
You, me and everyone else who have lost their precious horses are better for having them in our lives. I guess I never particularly expected mine to ever die at any age. Im so sorry for your loss.

Shortly, if she hasn’t already, her spirit will send you a sign…maybe even through another one of your horses, you’ll feel it….when her spirit crosses over into the other world, you will not mistake it for anything else….she’ll be telling you she’s o.k….just as my gelding did when he crossed over…my friend standing near me couldn’t believe it was happening….his last goodbye to me, letting me know his spirit was free…no more pain…if you have that kind of connection with your mare you’ll experience it soon. I also lost a horse to a traumatic injury and it’s never easy, your heart breaks, tears aren’t enough… will always have such wonderful memories. My sympathies to you and her owner.

This is sad for not only the horse community to hear but all those who were so wowed by Roxy’s amazing abilities which you, Stacy, brought out of her. My greatest sympathies to you and her owners. She was one in a million as I am sure no one knows better than you. Being glad to have had her in your life is her greatest gift which will be with you for ever. Thanks for sharing and cry a bit for what will be missed, but so glad you can continue to smile for having had Roxy as your friend and partner.

I recently had to put down my stud of 19 years and you do all that is humanly possible to save your best horse, but sometimes it is out of our hands. When they are in pain and there is no solution, but to put them out of their agony, we cannot make heroic efforts to keep them going for us. We have to do what is best for them for Im sure she knew your love and it was up to you to take her life gently as I did my horse. It is something that will stay with you and just know I do watch your video and cry each time seeing the bond you and your mare had. thanks for sharing such a good video! Gwen from North Carolina

Stacey, you and Roxy were an amazing team. I never got to see you two in person, but watched video of y’all at the Congress, your tribute to your Dad. No words can describe how my heart felt. Roxy will come to you in your dreams and you will ride and love on her and it will be your special place to meet. I lost a wonderful mare, Shonie Bars, in 1976, and we meet in my dreams. I am praying for you

I have to say this is so sad. I understand how hard it is to have to make that kind of a decision, being a horse person my self. But it is sometime the best decision sometimes for them. RIP roxy. I have watched that video and it brought tears to my eyes when iceatched it.

I understand you may not read all these messages, after receiving so many. Watching the 2006 competition on youtube, the performance dedicated to your dad… I was moved to tears. The incredible trust and ability between yourself and your horse… Brought tears to my eyes. I am in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, and with all respect, say that I take my hat off to you both. The two of you have set a precedent of what so many other people can aspire to achieve. I thank you for doing what you do and bringing a horse with so much ability to the public eye. You have given the public something to aspire to achieve, a horse as intelligent and responsive, a bond so prescious between horse and rider. A mare and rider that are incredible in their ability together. Awe inspiring. I thank you and the wonderful mare so much, she was brought here as a gift, not only to her rider, to every spectator as well.

    Thank you xx

When we were disheartened and frustrated by our search for our own land after buying and boarding a mustang in 2010, I watched the 2006 Championship video again and again, the dream of having my horse on my own land and building that kind of relationship sustained me through an emotionally and physically grueling journey.

In the end it was worth it. We’re here in Michigan on our own land, with our mustang, our boys’ pony, and two more mounts in our herd.

I don’t know how I would have made it through without the powerful inspiration Stacy and Roxy provided.

As I posted on Facebook, Roxy was the horse every rider dreams of…. My first thought was remembering she was due to foal soon. A double tragedy.

My condolences to those who have lost such a wonderful gift.

Hey Stacy…. I don’t think i’ve cried this hard in years. Hearing of Roxy’s passing, not only touched me on an emotional level; but on a level which evokes all of the feelings that we share with our horses. the bond, that is so sacred, and so special…
Having been able to meet you and Roxy a couple years ago; you inspired me, to become a better horsewoman; and look towards forming a close bond with my own filly, Wyndi. She and I finally reached that point over the weekend at Expo Pomona, and I thought of you and Roxy…. how much you two inspired me, to find that connection, and “ride with faith”.
My heart goes out to you and your family…. to all of those who lived for, and loved Roxy for who she was — an incredible mare, an incredible friend… and your family.

Much love to you from both Wyndi and I… I will always think of Roxy whenever we’re in the ring together. You’re in my heart, and my prayers. Take care, and godspeed!

So terribly sorry for your loss. I lost my mare and friend of 18 years after she was cast in her stall and received an injury to her front legs. We tried for 3 weeks to save her, but had to euthanize her in the end. She fought hard, but the pain was too great. She was very special. I have grieved for her for over two years, but find some comfort in knowing that others feel the same for their lost friends. I hope those who are reaching out to you are helping with this terrible loss. Knowing you are not alone gives great comfort.

I lost my horse of 17 yrs along w my mother and father last year and it was a tough time to see through the tears but my mom asked us not to cry… And that everytime we ride to move up in the saddle giving her room to ride along!! Roxy was an amazing animal and touched so many! May God bless you ALL through this difficult time and may you smile thru the tears….

Stacey, you and Roxy were the epitome of partnership and grace. The harmony between horse and rider was never more evident than when you rode Roxy. I too lost a very important equine family member one year ago and can tell you that she is near you. You will sense her presence and strength and can call on it when you need it the most. She will be there. My deepest sympathy,

Rest in Peace Roxy aka Whizzards Baby Doll. (3/15/01-2/08/12)

In 2006 I had the great pleasure of seeing Roxy and Stacy Westfall at the MA Equine Affaire.
Stacy and Roxy’s bond was like no other I had ever witnessed. I will never forget the rush of ‘goosebumps’ I had while watching the pair. The Colosseum housed at least 1000 people, it was completely dark and there was just a simple spot light on this amazing pair. I watched in awe of their relationship. I remember thinking how amazing it was that every time Stacy would stroke Roxy’s mane during their ride (brideless, bareback of course) she would lick and chew. Roxy’s trust in and love for Stacy was so apparent. Rest in peace sweet girl you have made an unforgettable impact on so many. Sending my heart felt condolences to Greg Gessner (Roxy’s owner), Stacy (Roxy’s chosen partner) and the rest of the Westfall family.

i just read about Roxy and am in tears with a heavy heart. My husband and I were watching you and Roxy on video last night about following your dreams. As I sat there watching I was thinking about the great partnership you had together and what it takes to get there. All the time and love you put in Roxy showed and I know it makes it even more difficult to loose such a friend. You and Roxy inspired and amazed many and will continue to do so for a long time. Thank God for the gift of the horse.

I am so sorry for your loss. We got to see you ride her and give a seminar a few years ago. It was for a charity organization somewhere in central Ohio but I can’t remember where… She was a beautiful girl then and I am sure she gave it her all at the end. Please know we will say some prayers for your family, losing a member is never easy ( much less a beautiful new life lost also). Hope you are riding her in your dreams at night.

I thank God for the phone call I got from Jesse telling me that Roxy was for sale and that he and Stacy thought she would be a good horse for me. I was excited to think I would someday show her myself. Little did I know that God had a different plan for us and WHAT a plan it was! This is the most amazing, true beauty of these great hearted heroes – the spark of love they generate, the strength of spirit they engender in others. You and Roxy shared this love and strength with millions, giving others the impetus to perservere, to struggle on toward their goals despite obstacles in their path. I have witnessed this many times in my life, having been blessed myself with a horse that had this spark, and known other wonderful equines who were wonderful ambassadors for their species. They color our world with beauty and grace, and when they are gone we still see the world differently. Years after my beautiful old man passed I watched you and Roxy in 2006 – it brought tears to my eyes and beauty to my heart. thank you for giving all of us the chance to share in the strength of your unity and the beauty of her spirit. I would like to give you one bit of comfort in knowing the grief slowly fades, but the love grows and grows.

My chest is tight for sure, but I won’t cry, I just won’t cry cuz it is over, cuz it happened. You and Roxy rolling along barefoot in your DVD’s are so beautiful. I am so glad you had this time with Roxy and I sure wish he did not hurt so much. Blessing dear gal from Texas! We are here for you and I know Roxy will send you the next greatest pony for your amazing self. God Bless Roxy, Greg, you and your family. I just know his heart is a hurtin’

THANK YOU for all you have done and continue to do I want to be like you 🙂 Sweet meadows with crisp clear streams, warm sunshine, nice shade trees, wildflowers and a nice cool breeze. That is what i heard is where horses go. There is no pain , sorrow, no suffering, just healthy shinny happy horses that forever roam free in endless lush meadows without a worry forever more. I am in a state of shock. I have never seen a pair together as one as you, Stacy and that beautiful black mare. You filled all of us admirers with awe, smiles and real emotion. The YouTube you dedicated to your father was extremely emotional and it showed what a GREAT horsewoman and a trusting, well trained mare can do with the greatest of ease. I have never seen anything quite as touching, nor as beautiful. Just as I choke up and the flood gates flow when I see that video, this was almost too hard to read. I hope Roxy is in Heaven with my Cutting mare, Such. They were both beautiful and kind, but even more, gone too soon. God bless you all in your loss, she was extra special.

God has chosen you as His ambassadors, your lives are a testament to HIS greatness. As you give credit to the Creator, you continue to let your light shine in this often dark world. thank you. May He continue to Bless you in your all endeavors. What a gift you have!

You will never forget her, and after you have raised your children and there is quiet time you will think of her often and be reminded by hundreds of little things that happen each day ~ Bill

Stacy, I am so sorry about you losing Roxi. When my good horse, Laddie Boy, passed this summer, this poem sure helped. Maybe you’ve seen it before, but for those who have lost that special horse, I’d like to post it here if you don’t mind.

Somewhere, somewhere, in times own space,
There must be some sweet pasture place.
Where creeks sing on and tall trees grow,
    Some paradise where horses go.
For by the love that guides my pen,
I know great horses live again.

I’m so sorry to hear about your wonderful mare Roxy… It brings tears to my eyes, also for the little colt that couldn’t survive. ♥
What wonderful times you must have had together with Roxy, she will live forever in your heart!
    God bless!

I Love this quote Stacy and I think it is so true through what you have gone through,”Life is not measured by the number of breathes we take but by the moments that take our breathe away.” Roxy, I am sure took your breathe away, and she has taken all of ours too! Love you!

Although this is quite awhile since your Roxy’s passing… sincere regrets! I as well as many others were simply in awe of the chemistry between you and this gifted mare. I have and still do watch your 2006 performance together shedding just as many tears each time… it’s inspiring!! And truly shows the connection a horse and rider can have…. priceless!! Thank you for showing all us horse riders/lovers just what’s possible! God blessyou!!
